Good news good news - according to the PR company handling the release (although not apparently handing out check discs for reviewers) the HMV exclusivity's only for three months. I'd expect a price drop thereafter.

Has anyone got this yet, and if so what are the transfers like?
At a guess, much better than the 6th generation bootleg quality.
It's not like there's anything better out there compared to this forthcoming set.
That being the self-same PR release I posted at #49.![]()

This must've slipped a week. I asked in an HMV this afternoon and it's out on Monday -- £39.99 in store, so the guy said.
Got this today. Seems OK: the prints aren't in absolutely terrific state, in fact they have a slight NTSC look to them, but they're fine.
Haven't watched the docu yet, it's on the last disc, Disc 6.
A heads-up -- the five commentary tracks are virtual Easter Eggs! Unless I'm missing something obvious, they are not advertised on the discs themselves anywhere and can only be accessed by changing the soundtracks "on the hoof".
They are all by writer/producer Tom Greene and don't start until he joined the show as producer with episode 15, "Force of Habit" (Disc 4). Then we have "Last Chance Louie", "Naka Jima Kill", "Boragora or Bust" (all Disc 5) and "A Distant Sound of Thunder" (Disc 6). From a 10 or 15m listen earlier they seem excellent.
I was looking for info on the show just now and it looks like there was an episode not shown by the Beeb in '82/'83 -- "Once a Tiger.." Hmm...look forward to seeing if I can guess why!
Could you comment more about the episode picture and sound quality?
They're not pristine 35mm transfers the way I've seen quite a few contemporary US tv shows look on DVD.
They're rougher than that, with not terribly natural looking colours. I'm trying to think of a comparison, because I've definitely seen their like before, but can't off the top of my head.
Maybe...on some of the M*A*S*H sets, there might have been a few episodes slipped in that weren't as solid looking as the others -- well, it looks like them.
But I still think they're fine and I'm happy enough -- was half expecting them to be not in great shape given how little seen the programme is. Bet they looked a lot better on BBC1 back in '82!
The sound is fine, as far as I can hear.
I have asked for this for Christmas. Am really looking forward to it as I have not had the pleasure of seeing this since it's original US broadcast 1982-3 (I lived in Rochester NY, before moving to the UK in August 1983). I have seen clips on YouTube and it seems to hold up well.
I wonder if this might have something to do with the original plans for the Region 1 release (i.e. they just transferred the films to NTSC and then sent that over to have a PAL transfer made).
Incidentally, the R1 release is now a "go" again, according to TVShowsOnDVD.
I imagine the UK edition is an NTSC-->PAL standards conversion. I think I'll wait on the US release instead.
