The Young Ones: 25th Anniversary Reissue

Phoenix Media (http://www.phoenixmedia.co.uk) are working on the extras. I'd urge everyone to drop them a line at info@phoenixmedia.co.uk and express interest. Let them know there's a demand/fanbase out there.

One item which definitely has to be included is the fabled bloopers reel. I implore everyone to mention this specifically - it's such a rare bit of footage, and it would be fantastic to liberate it.

Curious - I never bother waiting for Flash sites to load - I take it it says on their site that they're doing the extras?

There are quite a few people here more than qualified to help them out so hopefully some effort can be expended.

It doesn't seem to mention the Young Ones anywhere on the website.

It doesn't mention the disc on the site, but they are the people doing it.

Yes, but how can you be sure?

For all we know this could be a wind-up for them on your behalf. I don't mean to doubt you - but "Trust me they are" isn't good enough for me to send them an email.

Don't care if the episodes are still cut or have music missing.

I've had conversations with the chap who's doing it. For what reason would they be winding me up?

    Get writing!

And the only cuts on the current discs are unavoidable music ones, which weren't the fault of the DVD people. They'll probably still be cut, but it doesn't stop this reissue being potentially incredible in other areas.

I should stress, by the way, that the producer is specifically looking for extras and is receptive to suggestions. So it's not a futile exercise.

You mean the scene between the racist copper and the bloke delivering the Ford Tippex hasn't been cut?

    Still intact, yes.

I've already spoken to Anthony and Hamish about this. as far as I'm aware, the blooper reel no longer exists. Both broadcast quality copies were stolen from the BBC library and the only known copy is a VHS that was chewed up in a dodgy VCR. They used to play bits of this version into the studio between takes when they recorded 'Bottom', but the quality was terrible.

Ed Wooden, the VT editor for both 'Young Ones' and 'Bottom', put the blooper reel together and he doesn't even have a copy - which he was rather upset about! It's possible that some members of the production team did. I think I've asked Ed Bye in the past and he doesn't, put perhaps Paul Jackson does?

Is the whereabouts of the 'terrible quality' VHS known though? If it's the only known copy, then the picture quality wouldn't really matter.

What's the rough duration of it?

There were certainly VHS bootlegs of it around in the 1980s, and they were often offered for sale in the music press.

EDIT: And I'm utterly ignorant about this but is there no way of tracking tapes that have been stolen from the library?

Wasn't that the Cash/Nasty rushes tape rather than the bloopers reel though?
